Bluebell Brief Weekly Digest: Scarecrow Contest, Flu Shots, and a Send-Off for the Marching Band

Fall is settling in around town, and this week's calendar is full of the small rituals that make this season feel like home. The leaves along Mill Creek are turning, the nights are cool enough for a jacket, and someone has already put out a pumpkin on the courthouse steps. Here is what's happening around Bluebell over the next several days.

Scarecrow Contest Returns to the Square

The annual scarecrow contest kicks off Saturday morning, with entries lining the sidewalks around the town square through the end of the month. Businesses, church groups, classrooms, and families are all invited to build a scarecrow, and organizers say the only real rule is that it has to survive the weather. Past years have brought everything from a scarecrow reading a newspaper on a park bench to an entire pirate crew outside the hardware store.

Judging happens the last weekend of the month, with ribbons for funniest, most creative, and best use of recycled materials. If you've never walked the square during the contest, it's worth an hour of your time. Bring the kids, bring the dog, and bring a camera, because the light in late October makes even a straw-stuffed farmer look like art. Entry forms are available at the community center and at several shops downtown.

Health Clinic, Band Send-Off, and More

The community center hosts its fall flu shot clinic on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. No appointment is needed, and the clinic is open to anyone over six months old. Organizers ask that you bring an insurance card if you have one, but nobody will be turned away for lack of coverage. It's a quick stop, and it saves you a trip into the city later in the season.

On Thursday evening, head over to the high school parking lot to send off the marching band before it travels to regional competition. The band has been practicing after dark for weeks, and neighbors have gotten used to hearing the drumline echo across the ball fields. The send-off starts at 6:30 p.m., and the boosters will be selling hot chocolate and spirit wear. Bring a lawn chair and make some noise.

A few other notes for the week: the library's used book cart is restocked with mysteries and children's books, the food pantry is accepting canned goods and boxed cereal, and the parks crew could use a few volunteers Saturday morning to spread mulch around the playground. As always, if you have something you'd like included in next week's digest, drop a note to the Brief. This town runs on people who show up, and there's plenty of room for you.
