Five Things to Do Around Town This Month, From the Harvest Supper to the Trail Cleanup

Every month, someone tells us there is nothing to do around here, and every month, the calendar says otherwise. You just have to know where to look, and that is what we are here for. Below are five events worth circling this month, plus a couple of notes for anyone who wants to get involved rather than just show up.

The Big Four on the Calendar

Harvest supper at the Methodist church. This one has been running for decades and it shows in the best way. Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, and a pie table that takes up an entire wall. Seating is family style, which means you will likely end up next to someone you have not met. That is the point. Dinner starts at 5 p.m. and runs until the food is gone, which is usually by 7. Adults pay a modest amount at the door, kids eat free, and proceeds go to the food pantry.

Trail cleanup at the creek preserve. The volunteers who maintain the walking trail are organizing a Saturday morning cleanup, and they need more hands than usual this year. Bring gloves and sturdy shoes. The group provides bags, tools, and coffee. It runs from 9 a.m. to noon, and you are welcome to come for an hour if that is all the time you have. Every bit helps, and the trail has gotten heavy use since the weather turned.

Movie night on the square. The rec department is projecting a family film on the side of the courthouse the last Friday of the month. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair. There will be a popcorn stand, and the event is free. If it rains, it moves to the community center, so check the bulletin board before you head out.

Historical society open house. The society is opening its collection for an afternoon, including photographs and documents that have not been displayed before. Members will be on hand to answer questions and identify old photos if you bring them. If you have ever wondered about the families whose names are on the older headstones in the cemetery, this is your chance to ask.

Ways to Get Involved

Beyond the events themselves, there are a few standing opportunities. The food pantry needs volunteers on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to sort and stock donations. The library is looking for reading buddies for the after-school program, which is a small commitment with a big payoff. And the depot restoration crew welcomes anyone willing to swing a hammer or hold a paintbrush, even for a single Saturday.

If none of those fit, here is a simpler suggestion. Pick one neighbor you have not talked to in a while and invite them to the harvest supper. Community does not happen on its own. It happens when someone decides to make the first move, and around here, there is always room at the table. We will be there. Come say hello.
